A LOVER'S TALE - A POEM BY DONOVAN BALDWIN
On wet gray stones my boot heels clattered,
Echoes from silent walls... as if it mattered,
That she and I had passed this way,
And, parted at the dawn of day.
One hurried night of thoughtless pleasure,
While taken to its coarsest measure,
Within my heart a bright light gleamed,
It had been more than what it seemed.
Touched, oh yes touched deeply by,
The lady who had caught my eye,
Who I had claimed so casually,
Yet, tossed aside so soon to be...
And yet, 'twas I was caught within,
As net of love rose from our sin,
And as I heard the first bell toll,
She left ME there, a joke so droll.
As I lay, unbelieving and heartsore,
She left my world and shut the door,
And let the darkness in my soul,
Yes, on ME a joke so droll.

POEM: WRITING WITH MY SOUL'S DARK INK
Writing with my soul's dark ink
Words quicker than I think,
Molten flowing thoughts reveal,
A way for poet's heart to heal...
Not sugar sweet nor honey gold
But mere honest words are told,
The secrets buried deep inside,
That love demands I shall not hide.
Stolen glances, pounding heart
The distance that keeps us apart,
The need to see, and touch, and kiss
The needs and wants that we two miss.
Fingers that reach but cannot find
The body hid somewhere behind
Land and oh, the endless sea
Which ever flows twixt her and me.
The laughter that should loud resound,
The oaths by which we should be bound,
The whispers passed by candlelight
Lovers entwined by dark of night.
No ink, no words, can touch the skin.
This separation is a sin.
But, perhaps, these words find grace,
Somehow take my missing place.
Your whispered name upon my lips,
Your phantom at my fingertips.
These poor words all I can give,
And love as long as I shall live.
Ink will fade and paper crumble
But, these words, sincere though humble,
Pressed to your breast, to beating heart,
May cross the distance we're apart.

POEM: WE FOUND EACH OTHER ONCE AGAIN AT LAST
Wiping blank the destinies once made
An old memory at twilight dies...
An echo of a time we two once knew,
Flickers in the depths of lover's eyes
Somewhere in some ancient unknown land,
At long lost oasis caravans well met,
A tale began which stood the test of time,
Two who knew they were fated and yet...
Though fingers read their secrets,
And lips spoke love without a word,
Love embraced love the ancient way,
Till gasps and heartbeats could be heard...
Destiny moved on, tore them apart,
Destroying kiss and touch and mad embrace,
Mere memories remained of what passed there,
And time moved in to fill the empty space.
Though their world dissolved, apart they lived
And died, from lip to ear the story ages passed,
Reminding lovers of the pleasures of that night,
Till we found each other once again at last.

WHEN I LOOK INTO YOUR EYES - A POEM BY DONOVAN BALDWIN
When I look into your eyes,
I lose myself,
While gaining so much more.
Our eyes meet and I feel,
Our spirits begin to join.
I feel myself joining with you,
In a way that leaves me without
A full separation between
'You' and "Me'.
In my mind your whole being
Becomes a part of me
As I feel whatever is my soul,
Trying to fill you up as well.
What was a small, single person
Becomes so much more...
When I look into your eyes.
When I am looking into your eyes,
A change happens in me.
I become more complete,
Yet, at the same time,
More alone.
Your gaze enters me,
Flows into my being,
Filling me with feelings,
I thought were left,
A great distance behind,
In time and space.
You fill me with a warmth
That is a nectar,
Reviving all that used to be,
Before time, and circumstance,
Took what used to be,
Away.
Even though the body remains,
Outwardly unchanged,
The man within does change,
Into a better man,
Happy to be the subject
Of your gaze.

MOONLIGHT DANCER - A POEM BY DONOVAN BALDWIN
Midnight,
Moonlight dancer,
Mystic,
In the silver light,
Upon the shore of love's ocean,
Both of us caught up
In the mystique of our music,
Sounds speaking to lovers
Who hear the same song.
Through her,
It becomes a love song in motion,
Telling me with the movement of her body,
Touched and guided by
The music in her heart,
What she sees,
More...
What she feels.
Gently wrapped in softness,
Billowing,
Flowing to her steps,
Hips sway,
Breathing deeply with the music,
The emotion,
The moment of the dance,
Turning to me,
Warm loving eyes,
Dancing too with the offer of her art,
She is poetry in motion,
Music made a love beyond words...
Arms inviting,
Drawing me in
So deeply
I never want to leave her side,
Never be where I cannot see her,
Watch her in her dance,
Done not only for me,
But for both of us.

IF I COULD USE MY WORDS - A POEM BY DONOVAN BALDWIN
If I could use my words
I would use them to:
Tease you, tantalize you, tempt you,
Cajole, caress, and comfort you.
Take you, wrapped in love's embrace
To the heights of ecstasy,
And further still...
Until...
Gasping with the pleasure of the ride,
You collapsed with me once more,
Upon the breast of Earth.
I would use my words to:
Bring you to your knees,
Pledging undying love,
And a willingness to
Do my bidding in all ways
So that I could have the joy
Of freeing you from that pledge.
If I could use my words so well,
I would use them
To make you speak the truth
About the deepest secrets and desires
Within your heart.
And, with my words, I would assure
That you never doubted
Your secrets would be kept.
But, never could I use my words
To hurt, harm, or disrespect
The pure, sweet soul
Within your breast.

HAVE I ONCE KNOWN YOU IN SOME OTHER PLACE OR TIME - A POEM BY DONOVAN BALDWIN
Have I once known you in Some other place or time?
Were we lovers then,
Winging forward to the now,
Where we find ourselves
United as before?
These eyes, these lips,
Seeming delightfully new,
Are yet, somehow,
So famliar, and,
Joyful to behold,
To touch once more...
Or so it seems, that
You and I once were one,
Lost to one another...
Seeking through eternity,
For that one who
Filled and made us whole.
I gaze upon you,
Reach for you,
In your newness to
This time and place,
And, with wonderment,
Confused by familiarity
And ease, must ask,
In this now and here...
Have I known you in
Some other place or time?
