ARTICLE: ATTITUDES ON EXERCISE

By Donovan Baldwin

Two attitudes have influenced both senior exercise and exercise in the general population.

1. Exercise is good for you.
2. The more exercise the better.

Well, we all pretty much agree that exercise is good for you. There's a lot of scientific evidence to support that fact.

Also, in many ways, "more exercise" IS better for you than less...up to a point, of course. There can be too much exercise at any age.

However, another attitude has begun creeping into the exercise debate, and that is that any exercise is better than none.

This is particularly true for senior exercisers, according to Dr. David Hupin of the department of clinical and exercise physiology, University Hospital of Saint-Etienne, France.

The standard guideline of the amount of exercise needed for health is 150 minutes a week, stretched out over several days, of course. Dr. Hupin and his team found out two facts:

1. It is difficult for many senior exercisers to get this much exercise in a week....especially if they are out-of-shape beginners, and...

2. It takes a lot less exercise to produce many health benefits of exercise in seniors.

POEM: MESSAGES OF THE WIND

By Donovan Baldwin

I hear and understand

The messages of the wind,

Fragrance of bold red flowers

Small secrets whispered among

Trees and grasses, and sung about

By birds and cold running water,

Burned into the souls of us all

In rays of the afternoon sun,

Molded in silver moonlight,

Stories told us by ancients,

When we all were poets,

In bold conversation
